Organized as part of the Creative Age Festival, our 2nd annual symposium will showcase various initiatives and opportunities that are enhancing the depth and breadth of the field of arts and aging. As our lead keynote presenter, Dr. Cohen will present on the benefits of actively participating in professionally conducted arts programs for older adults. He will describe the findings of a trial he conducted in three cities – Washington DC, New York City, and San Francisco – each with very well matched comparison groups. Benefits will be described in relation to the participants’ general health, mental health, overall functioning, and sense of well-being – with positive benefits observed across a variety of art media and cultural forms (painting, pottery, dance, music, poetry, drama, material culture and oral histories). He will outline qualities and best practices associated with the positive program impacts that were observed. A long-time advocate for arts and aging, Dr. Cohen will also highlight how research and other approaches and structures can help to create creative futures for older adults in the new millennium.
